Poker has always been known as a high-risk game, but no one would have expected an armed robbery of a live poker tournament. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened, as six armed men stormed the Grand Hyatt Berlin where the PokerStars European Poker Tour had come for its latest round. The men attacked the poker tournament, armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles and hand grenades. Their goal was to take as much of the money for the poker tournament as they could, and they absconded with a reported 800,000 euros before they fled.

A live camera feed of the poker tournament caught images of poker players and spectators alike fleeing in fear as the gunman came into the hotel, threatening that they had a bomb. Fortunately, no one was badly injured, and the Poker Tour attempted to restart the poker tournament before 6pm. The incident likely casts a dark shade over the entire rest of the poker tournament, however, as it is hard to imagine that the poker players could easily overcome the trauma of having had to run for their lives from armed men. Similarly, it is difficult to believe that the same number of audience members remained at the poker tournament after the armed robbery.

Putting aside any mental trauma or physical injuries incurred during the event, the robbery had a significant impact upon the workings of the poker tournament itself. Not only was a significant amount of money stolen from the poker tournament, but the poker games were entirely disrupted, and the poker players’ stacks were flung around the room as poker tables were overturned to provide cover for fleeing attendees. After the incident, the 20 or so remaining poker players and staff for the tournament convened together in an attempt to determine the correct count for each player’s stack of chips. Obviously, in a poker tournament, there is very little else that would have as much significance as the stack of chips that the player carries over between each poker games. Having the correct count for this stack could easily be the difference between losing and winning for any given player; thus, it was critical that the correct chip count be reached. The poker players and staff were able to come to a consensus on the correct chip counts for each player with relative alacrity, in no small part due to the gravity of the events which had just transpired, and the importance of the current dilemma.

It is difficult to imagine an event more disruptive to any event, let alone a poker tournament, than an attack by armed robbers. Nonetheless, contestants were playing poker again soon enough, and the tournament proceeded with praise-worthy recovery speed. Presumably, however, this event means that future poker tournaments could very well see a spike in security. Even in spheres beyond the realm of poker, one could imagine this event sparking numerous impassioned reactions, leading to increased security in any number of events which normally would not have needed it. Regardless, the world of poker was shook up, only to return to the table with its poker face on. The mental stamina of poker players has never been greater displayed than in the aftermath of these events.

There are huge numbers of online poker sites all across the Internet; finding the ones with the most integrity and quality can be difficult. Not to worry, though; a quick review of some of the top online poker sites out there will hopefully lead you to choose the best one for you. Each site has different focuses and different traits, leading to one online poker site being perfect for new players without much cash to put on the line, while another is better for experienced players who are more than willing to pony up the dough. With any luck, you’ll find the right online poker site for you.

Sportsbook Poker
According to pokerlistings.com, Sportsbook Poker is the best online poker site overall. It’s actually a fairly new site, compared to some of the others out there, but this newness likely accounts for the innovation and special qualities that give the online poker site an edge over its competitors. One simplistic advantage that pokerlistings.com points out is that Sportsbook Poker is one of the online poker sources on the Cake Poker network, “which allows for US and Canadian players and for US credit card deposits.” This allows a flexibility that numerous other online poker sites lack. Beyond this, the online poker site is acclaimed for having a number of different varieties of poker available for players to enjoy, along with good software and loose games. The flaw of the online poker games offered by the site is that sometimes very skilled players can take advantage of the generally lower level of skill on the site. But online poker games of very high stakes are rare at Sportsbook Poker, and the low-stakes games are often considered more profitable.

Bodog Poker
Bodog Poker is second behind Sportsbook, and this online poker site has plenty to offer. Bodog Poker is relatively old, and “has seen its ups and downs over the last few years,” but the type of experience that comes with having run online poker for such a long time means that the website is designed to be the best it can be. The graphics and functionality of the online poker at Bodog are still quite solid, competing well with Sportsbook Poker, and Bodog continues to offer fantastic opportunities for those interested in “some of the juiciest and loosest games for the small-stakes player online.” The primary flaw of Bodog happens to be that the age of the site has led to something of a “leveling out” in its action; you are unlikely to make major, substantial games with ease and speed at Bodog. That being said, this site offers a good, solid, consistence source for online poker.

Cake Poker
Sportsbook Poker offers the advantages of being on the Cake Poker network, but it doesn’t offer everything that Cake Poker does. Cake Poker, coming in at third on the list of online poker sites, has a lot of its allure rolling in from the nature of its network, in that American players are allowed to compete in Cake Poker’s online poker games. A number of other prominent websites have blocked American players, thanks to restrictions placed by the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. That being said, however, Cake Poker still offers up action for American online poker players, and as a result it winds up attracting even more online poker players from around the world. Beyond this, the promotions of Cake Poker are often some of the best out there among online poker sites today.

There are many more online poker sites out there, and if you keep up your search, you’re likely to find the perfect one for you.

Historians have had difficulty determining the exact origins of poker rules; some are believed to have come from games all throughout history, while others are believed to be recent developments. Indeed, the origins of poker itself remain a matter of some debate. But regardless, poker is a game that has been with humanity for some time now, and has entrenched itself in American culture, if not cultures throughout the world. Learning how to play poker has never been easier, and even for those with no interest in playing the game for money would do well to learn its rules. Poker is a game that has had an effect on America, even if it is a subtle one, and understanding the nature of thought required by poker rules will give any individual a leg up.

Poker rules come in numerous different sets, depending upon the variety of poker that you’re playing. The most commonly played nowadays is Texas Hold’em. However, certain elements of poker rules do remain the same, making it easier to learn how to play poker in general. The primary element that is consistent across different poker variants is the nature of assembling a hand, in which the objective is to form the best possible type of matched set that you can using the cards available to you. Poker rules provide for a large list of different possible matches, and being able to measure the likelihood of achieving any given matched set against the value of that set is an important part of playing the game of poker. Instead of running through a full listing of the sets available in poker rules, a quick explanation of the most common sets possible to create will likely help a new player to learn how to play poker with greater speed. In general, matching cards of the same numeric value together is a good thing, with one pair being the first real match of value in poker. Two pair is also worthwhile, as is three of a kind, with three of a kind trumping two pair. Four of a kind is one of the best possible hands that a poker player can achieve under poker rules. Matching cards of the same suit is also good, though only if your entire hand falls under the same suite; this is a flush, and it is less valuable than four of a kind, but more so than three of a kind or any set of pairs. Of course, this type of hand is also often more difficult to reach. A full house is a hand with three of a kind, and two of a kind, and it comes between a flush and four of a kind in value. Finally, a straight is a set of sequentially ranked card values, like one two three four five, regardless of suit. It comes between three of a kind and a flush in value according to general poker rules.

Learning how to play poker is a matter of internalizing the values of these different sets of cards, right alongside with becoming able to assess how likely it is that you will be able to create any given set using the cards you were dealt, and the possibility of other available cards based on the rules of your particular poker variant. For instance, in Texas Hold’em, you are only dealt two cards; 7 other cards can be dealt as public cards, available to every player for use in creating the best possible hand. Learning how to play poker in this particular variant of poker rules requires a great deal of probability assessment, along with the innate understanding of the value of the different sets. If you can acquire the skills necessary to internalize these assessments, then you will have learned very well how to play poker.

Poker strategy is no simple thing, as it is a combination of both rational thought and risk assessment, alongside intuition. But there are several important elements of poker strategy for any given poker variant that can make the difference between success and failure for a player. In Texas Hold’em, one of the most vital elements of poker strategy is the practice of “counting outs,” which any Hold’em player must learn in order to succeed at the game.

This poker strategy is dependent upon the idea of being able to determine exactly how many cards there could theoretically be in the deck that could give you the best possible hand. Since Texas Hold’em is a variant of poker in which your initial hand of two cards is combined with a total of five cards on the board, out of which you assemble the best possible hand of five cards, then being able to determine how many opportunities you have to create a good hand before the cards are flipped is vital to overall Hold’em strategy. As an example, if you have an 8 of spades and a 9 of hearts in your hand, and then the first three cards flipped onto the board are a 6 of hearts, a 7 of clubs, and a 2 of spades, the “counting outs” poker strategy would lead you to a determination that there are 8 possible cards you could draw that would cap off the four cards you already have in a row. The 6, 7, 8, and 9 available to you would need either a 10 or a 5, of any suit, to become a straight. Thus, since there are four 10’s and four 5’s still in the deck, to the best of your knowledge, there are 8 outs available to you in this particular hand. Mastering the poker strategy of quickly and easily counting up these outs can lead to great success at Hold’em.

Another important element of this poker strategy is to remember to avoid counting outs that can lead to a better hand for your opponents. While you will not know necessarily what hands your opponents hold, you can still use your knowledge of poker strategy to determine which outs that would be good for you might also hold a great deal of value to your opponents. As an example, there could be two cards of the same suit in those original three cards on the table. If so, then any other card of that suit would allow another player whose hand includes two cards of that suit to gain a flush, meaning that you can’t necessarily count outs for the cards of that suit. Learning to try to accurately guess what hands your opponents are likely to be playing is a very important part of the “counting outs” poker strategy, and needs to be incorporated in to your learning early on.

Using the poker strategy of counting outs can help a new player become significantly better at assessing probabilities of success and failure in any given Hold’em poker game. This poker strategy can be the difference between an inexperienced novice, and an experienced player with the know-how to take the pot. If you wish to reach that experienced status, then look into learning this poker strategy right alongside the other important poker strategies for the variants of your choice.

At pokerlistings.com, there are a number of very useful articles for the up and coming poker player, to assist him in honing his poker strategy. One of the most important Hold’em strategies that is taught is one of the most simplest, and yet most easily ignored: play fewer poker hands. Every time a player chooses to play his poker hand, he is risking some of his money on the bet that he will be able to earn it back with his winnings, but too often in Hold’em, the poker hand a player is likely to have simply isn’t good enough to justify any bet. Part of learning poker involves learning which poker hands to let go, and which poker hands to play through to conclusion. In Texas Hold’em, this becomes something of a simpler prospect, if only because you have only two cards in your hand. This means that there are a total of 169 poker hands in Texas Hold’em, and out of those there are relatively few that are genuinely, consistently good and worth betting on. Pokerlistings.com describes fifteen hands that a player should consider playing, and goes on to suggest that all other poker hands should be abandoned. Obviously, situational elements do play a role, as there might be other hands that are worth playing, or other players could have folded or raised, which would change which poker hands are worth the risk of playing, but in general, the number of poker hands worth playing would remain fairly small; a player should fold poker hands much more often than he or she plays them.

In a new and upcoming form of poker, however, the problem is not so simple. While it is still vital that a player learns which poker hands are worth folding, and which are worth playing, in Omaha Hold’em, a form of poker that has had popularity in Europe for years and is now growing in popularity in America, the problem is significantly more complicated than in Texas Hold’em. In Omaha, a player has a poker hand of four cards, instead of the standard Texas two. Furthermore, at the end of each round of play, the player must assemble the best possible poker hand using exactly two of the cards in his hand, and three of the cards on the board. This actually limits some of the combinations that would normally be available in Texas, and it means that, for all that a player is getting four cards in his poker hand, he is also only ever going to use two of them. The other two are always going to be wasted, no matter what they are. So, for instance, getting four 9’s in your initial poker hand in a game of Omaha would actually not be a terribly good thing, as you are now actually depriving yourself of the opportunity to get four 9’s in your final poker hand.

Learning which poker hands to play and which poker hands to fold is one of the most fundamental aspects of learning to play poker well, and because every game has different rules, it requires a different set of judgments to be able to determine which poker hands are which for each different version of poker. But if you can reach a place where you feel comfortable folding exactly the right number of poker hands, where you don’t feel pressed to keep playing by some irrational urge, then you are on your way to becoming a better poker player.

Sometimes, when you’re trying to improve at something, you don’t need major, in depth articles about strategy, or complex mechanics that you need to learn. Sometimes, you just need a few solid tips. Pokertips.org provides these kinds of poker tips, focused on helping you improve at the game, without overwhelming you with excessive information. It’s filled with helpful articles and information, including some poker tips about common game mistakes, poker tips about jargon that most poker players use, and even reviews of online poker websites, and tools for calculating your odds quickly.

Some of the most basic poker tips offered up at this website don’t even have terribly much to do with poker, itself, as a game. One of the first sets of poker tips offered up seeks to answer the question, “Why Play Poker?” The article gives a few good poker tips on how to ensure that you’re playing the game for the right reason, and not for unhealthy or dangerous reasons. This kind of information is so often overlooked by sites seeking to help out would-be poker players that it’s nice to see these poker tips being offered in an easy to access, free manner. There are even more tips of this “outside-of-poker” variety, such as poker tips giving you some good advice about how much money you should be funneling into your poker playing, and how much is too much. There are poker tips for understanding the basic difference in structure between the standard game you’d play at home with a couple of friends, and the games you’re likely to find either at casinos, or online. Other poker tips include a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of playing online games that only use play money and not really money, as well as a discussion of the most important skills for a poker player to have before even getting started with poker.

Beyond this point, the site offers a wide range of poker tips, spread across beginner, intermediate, advanced, and expert levels. The beginner level includes most of these pre-poker tips, including very basic mental strategy tips, like “Keep it Simple,” and “Think For Yourself,” and “Keep your Ego in Check.” In the expert level, the tips go up to “When to Fold,” and “Big Mistakes.” These poker tips examine and provide advice on all aspects of playing poker, from the activity of the game itself to the search for an appropriate game site to lessons on psychology. The set of poker tips also includes information on probabilities for poker, and recommendations for which poker books to look to for more learning.

The articles on pokertips.org are short, simple, and to the point, imparting to the reader just the information necessary to get the point of the tip across. They’re a good way to build up a strong reserve of information to which you can refer to get your poker skills up to snuff. So if ever you feel like you’re in need of some good poker advice or some good poker tips, then pokertips.org is the place to go for all you’re looking for and more.

Addiction to online poker games is a genuine problem, especially amongst young people in college today. Poker games are fun and offer the potential to win money, and now, thanks to easy access to the Internet, they are readily available to any seeker. The presence of such easily accessible poker games has sped up the normal pattern of gambling addiction that has been seen and diagnosed for years. Instead of men of their 30’s or 40’s building up to a climactic terrible turn of events after a decade or so filled with poker games, now, men and women in their early twenties or even late teens are losing themselves to endless tides of poker games.

As reported in the New York Times article, “the Hold-’Em Holdup,” in June of 2006, there are any number of young individuals who have the same kind of terrible, life-shattering addiction that one would have only previously expected to see after years of playing poker games in smoky, poorly lit rooms. Greg Hogan, Jr., a 19-year-old sophomore at Lehigh University, wound up attempting a bank robbery on a spur of the moment whim, in order to pay back debts he had incurred from his numerous online poker games. Alex Alkula, a 19-year-old, decided to drop out of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in order to make his fame and fortune playing poker games, and instead found himself barely scraping by, sleeping on friends’ couches.

The nature of poker games is that they are addictive and deceiving, or otherwise they wouldn’t be so effective at generating money for either the numerous sites that employ them, or for the casinos that feature them. Players need to win often enough and large enough that they believe they have a shot of making a lot of money, only to find out too late that the more poker games they play, the less likely they are to have actually come out ahead. Online poker games magnify the problem tenfold; gone are the pauses in between games for shuffling, or any of the other numerous physical actions that might cause a temporary lapse in game play. Instead, the poker games function quickly, easily, automatically, with very little hiccup between each one, allowing a player to go through dozens of games with ease, even playing multiple poker games at the same time.

The fact that the poker game system in generally depends upon individuals who either don’t have the skill to realize that they don’t have much skill, or who don’t mind consistent losses, leads one to question the ethics of the entire affair. Essentially, for all that poker games are entertaining and fun, their long-running sustainability is based on a con, a deception. About 1 in 10 of those who consistently play poker games will actually succeed at making money in the long run, and poker games function by feeding off the hope of those who believe that they will successfully be that one in ten. In the end, the danger of poker games has always been present, but it has never reached such a height as it has now, with the advent of online poker games. It seems that the only way to curb the growing danger of the games is to take action of a different form, to educate individuals about the reality of poker games, online or otherwise. Knowledge is the key to defeating deception, like that which is inherent to the functioning of poker games; while poker games need not be abolished at all, players should be made aware of the dangers in pursuing these fleeting entertainments too vehemently.

Free poker online has been cropping up more and more with the advent of the Internet, and it’s led to some unexpected consequences. It’s easy to overlook gambling addiction as having existed previous to the advent of free poker online, but never before had gambling been so easily accessible for so many people, and never had it been more costly than with the free poker being offered by so many websites. Free poker seems innocuous enough, if for no other reason than because it’s free. If you don’t input your credit card information, then there would seem to be no danger to online poker. But free poker acts, in a way, as a gateway drug, teaching players all the behaviors necessary to get them started on a terrible addiction.

Essentially, the very nature of free online poker is designed at conversion to full-fledged, paid poker, as is exemplified in so many similar poker tournament strategies. Having great prizes, great offers, and ease of access are all designed to lure the online poker player from playing free poker to playing with higher stakes. True, a lot of paid online poker is illegal, thus making free poker one of the only available ways to spread poker amongst players in America. But this doesn’t stop paid poker sites from extending offers to those who have already come to play and enjoy free poker online. Essentially, it is as if someone were coming to tell a player that a game he has played a great deal of, and believes he has become proficient at, will suddenly start paying him money back for playing, if only he’ll risk a bit of his own money first.

As an example, PokerStars.net claims to be the best source of free poker online that is out there on the Internet. It’s one of the top hits when one searches for free poker online on a search engine. The website proclaims consistently that it offers free poker, along with free poker advice and the like. But a bit more examination makes it clear that the poker offered at PokerStars.net is not free, not by a long shot. It seems that because way because technically, you are spending money in order to buy online chips in a PokerStars.net game. You are not directly spending your money within the games offered by PokerStars.net; you are instead purchasing a false currency which you can use to play PokerStars.net games. The fees may not even be terribly large, but they are still there, and they are still costing players something. But, on the other hand, they are offering a return to players of actual money.

Free poker online can offer a good, fun way to while away some time, without losing money, when it is used moderately. The problem arises with the fact that free poker online is used as a way of luring players in to games where they have the potential to earn actual money. After a player considers himself skilled or trained from having played free poker for a while, that player may then decide to risk some money on paid poker online. If the player wins, then he will think all that free poker has transformed him into a good poker player, and he will continue to play. Sometimes, this works out, and the player actually does have the necessary skill and talent to become successful at paid poker. But far too many times, players who think they have the potential to become the next poker champion wind up losing vast sums of money to the debt they accrue in paid poker games.
